Ground broken on Navy’s solar photovoltaic project

Guam – U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Marianas hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday to mark the start of a solar photovoltaic electricity generating system on U.S. Naval Base Guam. This energy conservation measure (ECM) will install a 250 kilowatt photovoltaic electricity generating system consisting of solar cells that convert sunlight directly into electricity.

“This is really about a commitment by the United States Navy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil,” said Capt. Peter Lynch, commanding officer for NAVFAC Marianas.  “It is a strategic imperative that we reduce that demand from foreign oil products, and that asset that is renewable is something that we want to take advantage of.”

Here is my list of the top ten Green Giants, the companies most likely to produce, develop and promote the ideas and products that will have the widest ranging effects.

Johnson Controls is participating on the retrofit of the Empire State Building while its battery group received $299 million from the DOE to develop nickel cobalt batteries for hybrids. The joint venture Johnson Controls-Saft makes lithium ion batteries for Ford. The company also likes solar steam.

Johnson Controls helps light up the night

Kenosha’s downtown will be taking on a different glow for a few weeks.

Crews from Pieper Electric have started to install light-emitting diode bulbs in street lighting along 54th Street near Kenosha’s lakefront this week.

The trial run, which is being conducted with Milwaukee-based Johnson Controls, is part of a $902,000 federal grant the city received for use with high-efficiency lighting.

Olathe, Kansas residents starting to see installation of new water meters

Water crews began installing new water meters this week that will make the Olathe’s water system more efficient and accurate.

“This will allow the city to collect consumption data that they weren’t able to collect before,” said Greg French, project manager with Johnson Controls.

“Super Windows” for the Empire State Building

As part of a massive greening of the Empire State Building a new Heat Mirror® film technology by Southwall is being used to dramatically boost the energy-efficiency of the landmark building’s more than 6,500 hundred windows.

Johnson Controls is overseeing the full retrofit project with a team of energy efficiency experts including the Clinton Climate Initiative, Jones Lang LaSalle, and Rocky Mountain Institute.

Johnson Controls, other companies, urge President Obama to promote access to energy info

A group of companies and organizations led by Google urged President Obama Monday to help promote actions that would make it easier for consumers and business to see how much energy they use and to take steps to curb their energy use.

In a letter to the president, the groups urged action to help energy consumers see the sources and causes of their energy consumption, data on the cost of their energy use, and information on how electricity is used.

Johnson Controls selects Brainerd School District for ESM system

The Brainerd School District was selected as the only district in the U.S. to receive the benefits of an in-depth facilities management program that will increase efficiencies in district facilities as well as reduce energy and maintenance costs and much more, according to a news release.

Johnson Controls is implementing a $70,000 Enterprise Sustainability Manager system in two of the district’s facilities beginning April 1, at no cost to the district.

Milwaukee-area companies step up green energy efforts

Johnson Controls Inc. is expanding its advanced battery research and testing space at its Glendale headquarters, one sign of the Milwaukee area’s efforts in the race for green economy jobs.

Mary Ann Wright, a key Johnson Controls advanced battery executive, said the Glendale-based firm is matching dollar-for-dollar a $299 million stimulus grant that is aimed at creating a domestic supply chain for advanced batteries, a sector dominated by firms in China and other Asian countries.
