In the late 1980s, Johnson Controls, an American company, developed a system, which is still commercially available. In Johnson Controls’ “Personal Environments” modules, air is delivered through desktop control units, and workers can adjust temperature, airflow, and lighting. Over the years, units have been installed in a number of buildings – for example, at the Security Benefit Group in Topeka, Kan., and JohnsonDiversey in Sturtevant, Wis.

The need for companies to measure their energy usage and carbon emissions just became more urgent.
Recently, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission issued new guidance to publicly traded companies: you must disclose the impact of climate change and climate change regulation on your business.
Included are actual physical effects of severe weather, rising sea levels, changes in demand for products and other direct impacts that may result from a changing climate. In addition, companies must also disclose risks and opportunities they may experience from either existing or potential regulation of their carbon emissions.

Johnson Controls Inc. has opened two new performance-test laboratories for commercial air-conditioning equipment at its Grantley Technology Center in York, Pa.
The labs will verify the operating performance of air-handling units and air-cooled chillers, as well as augment research, development and test capabilities at the Grantley Technology Center, which also houses advanced labs for underfloor-air distribution systems and water-cooled chillers.

For the second consecutive year, Johnson Controls has been named an Emerging Market Leader in enterprise carbon accounting software, according to a new report from Groom Energy Solutions, a renewable and energy-efficiency service provider.
Johnson Controls is one of eight leaders named in Enterprise Carbon Accounting: An Analysis of Corporate-Level Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Reporting and a Review of GHG Software Products. The ranking was weighted and leaders were selected based on an evaluation of customer deployments, technology features, market vision and financial stability. This is the second consecutive year Johnson Controls was named an emerging leader.
The recognition reflects Johnson Controls’ continued leadership in energy and emissions reporting and accountability. Its Energy and Emissions Management System provides global organizations with the capability to analyze energy trends and calculate greenhouse gas levels. This Web-based system measures, manages and forecasts activities related to energy cost, consumption, energy efficiency projects, fleet emissions, and waste.
